The Client

IZA is an independent economic research institute that conducts research in labor economics and offers evidence-based policy advice on labor market issues. Supported by the Deutsche Post Foundation, IZA runs the world's largest network of economists, whose research provides answers to the global labor market challenges of our time. Its key objective is to build bridges between academic research, policymakers and society.

The Brief

To increase the impact and reach of IZA, make complex findings and research results accessible and of interest to a larger audience, and extend the IZA brand and reputation globally.

One of IZA’s key objectives is to build bridges between academic research, policymakers and society. To achieve this aim we started the IZA World of Labor project in 2011 to build a free online platform that provides quick and easy access to knowledge in labor economics.

Bloomsbury's Solution

Bloomsbury provides the IZA with a fully managed publishing services solution to meet this brief, in the form of the IZA World of Labor website and associated publicity, event, marketing and social campaigns. The IZA World of Labor curates and summarises complex content, ideas and thought leadership, making it easily understandable and then engages a global audience through multiple channels, media and influencer outreach, strategic partnerships and special events.

We developed the format and unique style of our content together with Bloomsbury and launched the site in 2014. Since then we published over 400 articles and relaunched the site in 2017 to give it a fresh and up-to-date appearance. Since then Bloomsbury has offered highly valuable support and guidance on issues related to publication standards, web design and functionality as well as marketing activities.

The Results

  • 400+ peer-reviewed IZA papers published online, along with specially created summaries of each that target policy makers, advisors, the media, and the general public/society.

  • 750+ global press mentions since launch

  • Labor economics policy analysis and advice covered by major media outlets including The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Die Welt, The Telegraph, The Times, The Washington Post, TIME, The Independent, The Daily Mail and The New Yorker

  • Events in Europe, South America, USA with partners including the OECD and the World Bank
